Assistant Manager - Major Projects Advisory
London
About the team
Our Advisory capability brings our Consulting and Deal Advisory businesses together as one team, combining our expertise and talent. We solve business challenges, helping our clients to realise their growth ambitions, from strategy to transaction and through to transformation.
KPMG's Major Projects Advisory (MPA) team works with leading organisations to solve complex infrastructure challenges. We provide clarity to boards, executives and Senior Responsible Owners (SROs) on the delivery of major projects and programmes across the public and private sectors.
Our work spans natural resources, energy, power and utilities, transport, corporates, oil and gas, defence, health, housing and education. The team brings deep construction industry experience gained with project owners, contractors, engineering consultancies and other organisations in the UK and overseas.
You will join one of the fastest-growing areas of the firm at a significant point in its development. You will be surrounded by spirited, naturally curious colleagues who share knowledge, learn from one another and focus on achieving a greater collective impact.
About the role:
This opportunity is for an ambitious Assistant Manager who can combine practical infrastructure or construction delivery experience with commercial acumen to solve complex problems. You will work alongside experienced colleagues, support junior team members and provide clear, concise advice to senior clients and stakeholders.
The MPA team is based in London, Birmingham and Manchester. The role will be based in one of these locations and will involve travel to client sites across the UK, with occasional overseas travel.
What you'll be doing:
-
Assess project and programme information quickly, identify causal factors and develop evidence-based insights on cost, contract and performance challenges.
-
Provide clear, concise commercial advice to boards, executives, SROs and other senior stakeholders.
-
Write and review briefing notes, recommendations, commercial reports and other key client documents.
-
Support commercial advisory and assurance work across construction and infrastructure projects.
-
Manage workstreams and coordinate the work of junior colleagues to deliver high-quality outputs.
-
Plan and forecast project resources, including work planning, annual leave tracking and timesheet analysis.
-
Support financial management, including monthly applications for payment in line with reporting requirements.
-
Proactively manage the monthly delivery cycle so that deadlines are met and activity is completed to a high standard.
-
Build trusted client relationships and work effectively in political, sensitive and confidential environments.
-
Contribute to business development and support delivery of the MPA growth strategy.
Skills, knowledge and experience you'll need:
-
Relevant experience in commercial advisory or assurance for construction or infrastructure projects, gained in a site-based, client, contractor, consultancy, public sector or advisory environment.
-
A sound understanding of construction cost drivers, contractual mechanisms, industry-standard contract forms and the factors that affect project performance.
-
Confidence working with senior clients and stakeholders, with the ability to build rapport quickly and provide clear, credible advice.
-
Strong analytical judgement, with the ability to interpret unfamiliar situations and data and develop an understanding of causal factors.
-
Experience producing and reviewing high-quality commercial documents and managing work in confidential or politically sensitive settings.
-
Experience coordinating junior colleagues and managing project resources, delivery cycles and financial reporting activities.
-
Additional expertise in areas such as project or programme management, project controls, earned value management, estimating, risk, procurement, resource management, claims and disputes, governance, or progress towards a relevant professional qualification such as MRICS, MICE, ChPP, MAPM or CIOB would be beneficial.
We are looking for a self-starter who is confident and articulate, committed to continuous learning and motivated to grow with the team. Whatever skills you bring, you will have opportunities to learn from colleagues and contribute your own perspective.
