Senior Tax Manager - Tax Investigations

The Role
The Tax Investigations team sits within the KPMG Private Client tax team, a fast-growing and integral part of the wider KPMG tax practice. In order to support further growth we are looking to appoint a Senior Manager to our Investigations Team.
We are looking for excellent candidates with a proven track record in this area who are seeking a dynamic and supportive working environment to help deliver quality advice to a varied portfolio of clients as well as support the growth of the business.
Our client base includes a portfolio of high net worth clients, entrepreneurs, high profile sports people and entertainers, shareholders and international individuals. You would be expected to lead the delivery of quality advice to our clients on tax dispute matters, lead on HMRC enquiry and disclosure projects and also provide wider disputes specialist knowledge to other KPMG teams in the firm including working with our tax litigation team.
Responsibilities
- Responsibility for management and strategy for complex HM Revenue & Customs enquiries or disclosures for a portfolio of clients, including COP8/9. This includes leading the relationship with both clients and HMRC (with the support of more senior staff).
- Preparation of investigation and disclosure reports, including all computational aspects of the report, for submission to HMRC working directly to a Partner and delegating appropriate tasks to junior staff.
- Take the lead in preparing agendas / plans for internal case management and HMRC meetings. Ensure points are progressed as necessary.
- Good working knowledge of the statutory tax administration framework and HMRC’s guidance in compliance work including a good understanding of the Litigation and Settlement Strategy (LSS).
- Act as a Subject Matter Expert (with the support of the Partner) to the wider Private client business in respect of tax enquiry and disclosure matters. including but not limited to discovery assessments, information requests and penalty matters.
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships with portfolio clients, internal KPMG teams and identifying leads for new work.
- Supporting the Private Client teams with attendance at marketing events and having an awareness of the firms other service lines.
- Maintaining specialist knowledge with the support of our knowledge teams and upskilling the national Private Client team on new HMRC initiatives and changes to tax rules.
- Assist in the management of the team and take responsibility for the coaching and development of other team members.
- Controlling the financial aspect of an assignment by evidencing strong WIP management and billing controls.
The individual
Qualifications and Skills
- University degree.
- CTA/ACA/ACCA qualified (or overseas equivalent), or relevant work experience and internal tax qualifications within HM Revenue & Customs.
- Must be able to use Microsoft Office.
Experience and Background
- Excellent technical specialist knowledge and expertise on all matters related with tax disputes and HMRC enquiry issues.
- Extensive post qualification experience of a broad range of enquiry scenarios, voluntary disclosures and Tax Administration matters.
- Deep experience of case management of multi-stream and complex enquiries, typically undertaken by HMRC’s FIS or WMBC teams.
- Strong analytical mindset and excellent report drafting skills.
- A high level of drive, enthusiasm and a positive attitude that translates across the team.
- A strong team ethic and the ability to grow resources and personally invest both within your immediate peer group but also more widely across the firm.
- Solid commercial awareness and understanding of diverse tax matters.
